Chains / Solo mat / Build
Breakfall to technical stand-up
Fall safely, then get back to the feet with a posted hand and a planted foot.
Two or three movements in the order they actually happen, so the finish of one is the start of the next.
Phases of this study
- Sit back. Chin tucked on the chest.
- Land and slap. Rounded back, arms wide.
- Recover to a sit. Hands in front.
- Post and lift. Hand and opposite foot take the weight.
- Stand in base. Both feet down before the post releases.
Common faults
- Standing without sitting
- Rolling straight from the landing to the feet with no base in between.
- Reaching back on the fall
- The arm that should slap goes behind to catch.
- Locked knees
- The stand-up finishes upright with no base.
Why it matters
Falling and getting up are one skill in a match. Rehearsing the pair means the first thing after a fall is a posted hand, not a scramble.
Drill prescription
3 rounds of 40 seconds work with 30 seconds rest. Fall, sit, stand, squat. Four per round.
Scope
Solo drill on a mat. No partner, no grips, no weight, no pressure and no resistance are shown. Not coach-verified: a qualified instructor has not reviewed the animation or these notes. Falls are rehearsed from a squat only.
Cues the timer will call
- Chin tucked on the way down.
- Sit up before you post.
- Both feet down before releasing the hand.
Movement notes: Back breakfall
- Squat. Start low in a squat with the arms in front and the chin tucked.
- Sit back, chin tucked. Sit back rather than falling straight down, keeping the chin on the chest.
- Land and slap. Land on the rounded upper back with the arms slapping the mat at about forty five degrees, palms down.
- Recover. Come back to a sit and up to the squat without reaching behind you.
Watch for. The chin stays tucked and the head never touches the mat; the arms slap the mat, they do not reach back to catch the fall. Practise on a proper mat and learn the fall from a coach before doing it from any height.
Movement notes: Technical stand-up • sequence map
- Seated base. Use a planted foot and the opposite posted hand.
- Post and lift. Lift the hips while the free hand remains in front.
- Leg clears back. Bring the free leg back into space behind you.
- Stand. Establish both feet before releasing the post.
Watch for. Use the camera to inspect the supporting hand and opposite foot. Learn the full movement in class before practising independently.
Rehearse, then reflect
Open the visual study to step the phases on the live model. Start slowly using the movement taught by your coach, pause between repetitions and keep the range comfortable. Add the study to a session when you want a timed block, and record one useful observation afterward.
