Defence and recovery / Solo mat / Build
Combat base to standing base
From one knee up to a staggered standing base, and back down under control.
Getting back to a base you can work from: off the back, off the knees, out of an inversion, after a fall.
Phases of this study
- Combat base. One foot posted, toes tucked.
- Standing base. Rise through the posted foot into a staggered base.
- Settle. Knees bent, weight over the balls of the feet.
- Post the foot. Lower with the same foot forward.
- Combat base again. Hips under the shoulders.
Common faults
- Rising with the chest first
- The head comes up before the hips and the base tips.
- Straight legs at the top
- The standing base is upright with locked knees.
- Dropping to both knees
- The descent skips combat base and lands flat.
Why it matters
Up and down between the knees and the feet without a wobble is what lets a top athlete change level on purpose rather than by accident.
Drill prescription
3 rounds of 40 seconds work with 20 seconds rest. Up, settle, down. Alternate the leading foot every repetition.
Scope
Solo drill on a mat. No partner, no grips, no weight, no pressure and no resistance are shown. Not coach-verified: a qualified instructor has not reviewed the animation or these notes. The animation plays the two bases as separate beats; the rise between them is not shown as one movement.
Cues the timer will call
- Push through the posted foot to rise.
- Land in a bent-knee base.
- Lower with the same foot forward.
Movement notes: Kneeling posture to combat base
- Tall on both knees. Kneel tall with the hips over the knees and the hands in front.
- Post a foot. Post one foot forward beside the other knee without leaning over it.
- Combat base. Settle with the rear toes tucked, the hands ready and the eyes level.
- Return. Return the foot and repeat on the other side.
Watch for. Combat base is a base, so the hips stay under the shoulders; leaning the chest over the posted knee gives the base away. Which knee is up depends on the partner, which this study cannot show.
Movement notes: Standing base
- Feet apart. Stand in a comfortable staggered base.
- Knees available. Keep enough knee bend to change your level.
- Hands ready. Keep your hands available without reaching past your base.
- Settle. Pause and verify your balance.
Watch for. Not a complete stance for every grappling ruleset.
Rehearse, then reflect
Open the visual study to step the phases on the live model. Start slowly using the movement taught by your coach, pause between repetitions and keep the range comfortable. Add the study to a session when you want a timed block, and record one useful observation afterward.
